Montclair Township Council Considers Fourth Ward Liquor License and Property Remediation
MONTCLAIR, NJ - The new Montclair Township Council under the leadership of Mayor Renée Baskerville met on July 17 in what was, apart from Mayor Baskerville herself, the first initial meeting of an all-freshman council since 2008. The agenda was pretty straightforward – one newly introduced ordinance and seventeen resolutions – but the format was noticeably different from councils led by previous mayors. For one thing, the council chose to start the meeting at 5:30 and go immediately into an executive session, which lasted nearly two hours (the public portion of the meeting lasted for three hours...
Then and Now: Northeast Corner of Valley Road and Bellevue Avenue
In this edition of “Then and Now,” we look at Upper Montclair’s northeast corner of Valley Road and Bellevue Avenue. At the turn of the 19th century, pharmacies such as J.H. Laubenheimer at the northeast corner of Valley Road and Bellevue Avenue were ubiquitous, and there were often multiple pharmacies within a single block. This location operated as a drugstore at least into the 1950s, and many residents may remember it as Valvano’s or Val’s. The pharmacies often featured soda fountains; note the wooden counters running along the outside of the pharmacy.

Former NYC Rite Aid is now overrun by booze-swilling vagrants, zonked-out junkies: ‘F–king preposterous’
A former Rite Aid in Queens has been transformed into a nightmare out of “Mad Max,” overrun by booze-swilling hobos, zonked-out junkies and migrants who have transformed the forlorn spot into their own dystopian social club. The mostly middle-aged derelicts laid claim to the 25,058-square-foot Astoria plot seven months ago, neighbors say — planting Mexican, American and Puerto Rican flags atop the vacant building’s roof and furnishing it with sofas, tables, chairs and foam mattresses. They’ve since turned the site into a blight, dangling bizarre items from the roof’s edges. Everything from bras and bicycles, to pool noodles and a Power Wheels...
