MONTE ALTO, Texas ( ValleyCentral ) — Hidalgo County officials removed more than two dozen dogs from a Monte Alto residence where an 85-year-old woman died after being attacked by her black pit bull mix breed.

Approximately 25 dogs were removed by the county from a residence located in rural Monte Alto, located at the 22000 block of Jesus Flores Road.

Geronima Florez was killed outside her home Friday evening when she went to feed her dogs and one of them attacked her.

The canine that attacked Florez was shot and killed by Florez’s brother with a shotgun, according to the Hidalgo County Sheriff’s Office.

Sgt. Enrique Longoria with the Hidalgo County Sheriff’s Office said Florez would take in strays out of the kindness of her heart and feed them.

Following the attack, the family did not want the 25 dogs and contacted the county to pick them up.

Most of the dogs Florez took into her residence were puppies, Longoria added.
