High school seniors from low-income public housing awarded $300K in scholarships
Local high school seniors living in Section 8 and public housing were awarded with over $300,000 in scholarships on Thursday.The charity Build Hope Incorporated partnered with the Housing Authority of the City of Los Angeles to award the scholarships.Students and family members gathered at the California Science Center for the 12th annual celebration.Students continuing their post-high school education were awarded the money to support their academic journeys."Very happy they're supportive, and they really believe in my choices that I want for my future, such as working for an aerospace company, so this scholarship shows that they really do believe in me," said Eva Mendoza, one of the student recipients.All students who received scholarships come from one of HACLA's public housing communities or are supported by HACLA's Section 8 Program.MORE: Hope Housing for Students helping CA community college students growHaving launched in August 2020, the program has expanded and is available to all nine LACCD campuses.
Ramona Convent Commencement Honoring the Class of 2024
Ramona Convent Seniors were celebrated with a beautiful traditional ceremony. The sun shone brightly as did the spirit of our graduates, families, and friends. Ramona was honored to welcome back Danielle Cendejas ’00 as Commencement speaker. After graduating from Ramona Convent, she attended Gonzaga University where she studied Political Science and Applied Communications. She is currently a political strategist with more than 15 years of experience working with candidate and advocacy campaigns and was recently appointed to Gonzaga University’s Board of Regents.

SFHS Cross Country Kicks Off Season with Alumni Mentorship and Team Spirit
Summer is underway, and St. Francis High School (SFHS) fall sports are already preparing for the upcoming competition season. The cross country team, in particular, has hit the ground running with enthusiasm and dedication. Shown above is a picture of some of the cross country runners on their first day of practice. It was heartwarming to see many SFHS alumni return to mentor and encourage this year’s runners. Their presence not only provided valuable guidance but also inspired the current team members to strive for excellence. The blend of experience and youthful energy bodes well for a promising season ahead.

John Lennon Educational Tour Bus Visits Centennial High School in Compton
The John Lennon Educational Tour Bus visited Centennial High School in Compton on Tuesday, June 25th. During the visit, students had the opportunity to learn about professional audio and video studio operations. Candice Boggerty, Centennial High School Audio Production Instructor, was on hand to give a bus tour and show the high-tech recording equipment. “Today, the students come together in this bus studio and write, record, engineer, and complete a musical composition of their own.” Candice said, “And they get to showcase it at Burbank’s AME (Arts, Media Education) conference tomorrow. Many great artists have recorded and toured on this bus, including Stevie Wonder, Black Eye Peas, and Wu-Tang Clan. I teach students at Centennial High Audio in a two-year class where the first year is mainly an introduction to audio production, and the second year is work-based learning. Our goal is to prepare these students for audio and video engineering careers and keep them in a job where they can work in the community. Hollywood is the center of the entertainment industry, and we want to allow them to work right here in their backyard.”
