Montgomery police are asking for the public’s help in finding an 18-wheeler driver who they say was involved in the fatal hit and run of a pedestrian Monday .

At about 7:14 a.m., police and fire medics went to the West South Boulevard I-65 South off-ramp on a report of commercial vehicle striking a pedestrian, said Maj. Saba Coleman, spokeswoman for the Montgomery Police Department. The pedestrian, Lavaris Rawlinson, 32, of Montgomery, sustained fatal injuries, she said.

Coleman said the driver fled the area before police arrived. The driver could face charges of felony leaving the scene of an accident, she said.

If a person is killed or injured and the responsible driver flees, they could be charged with the Class C felony, which has a punishment range of one to 10 years in prison. The driver could also face misdemeanor criminally negligent homicide in the case. It carries a maximum punishment of one year in the county jail.

The circumstances of the case remain under investigation, and no other information was immediately released. Police ask people with knowledge of the case to call CrimeStoppers at 334-215-STOP, the Secret Witness Line at 334-625-4000, or MPD at 334-625-2831.
