Two people who called 911 for help as they were trapped in their burning home did not survive the incident in rural Montgomery, Minnesota.

Roman and Betty Jindra, ages 76 and 73, respectively, were in their home when it caught fire early Sunday morning. According to the Le Sueur County Sherrif's Office, Betty called 911 at 12:54 a.m. to report that they were trapped in the burning home.

A deputy who was first to the scene was "driven back" when attempting to enter the home because of "heavy smoke and heat," the sheriff's office said in a press release.

Members of the Montgomery Fire Department arrived and were able to get inside the home, where they found the Jindras in the kitchen area. The Jindras were brought outside and life-saving medical aid was attempted but both were pronounced dead at the scene.

According to social media posts, Roman and Betty had been married for more than five decades.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
