MONTICELLO - A 2-year-old died Tuesday evening after being left inside a car in Monticello in Sullivan County.

Village of Monticello police reported Wednesday that officers responded to a 911 report of a child in cardiac arrest inside a vehicle outside a building at the Sleepy Hollow Apartment Complex on Terri Lane around 6:45 p.m. Tuesday.

Monticello police officers and firefighters, and members of a Catskills Hatzolah Emergency Medical Services crew who responded to the scene, all tried to resuscitate the child, but their efforts were unsuccessful.

Sullivan County Coroner Alan Kesten subsequently declared the child, who has not been identified by police, dead at the scene.

An active investigation into the child's death is currently being led by state police, with assistance from Monticello Police and the Sullivan County District Attorney's office.
