    Monticello track and field leaves competition in the dust

    Monticello hosted a Mississippi 8 conference track and field meet on Tuesday, May 14. It was the final time varsity athletes had a chance to compete before the conference and section meets.

    No team scores were recorded for this meet between Monticello, Becker, Big Lake, Chisago Lakes, Princeton and St. Francis. The girls won nine races, including the girls’ 4x100 meter relay team of Sasha Steinbach, Kacie Lilledahl, Kaela Skistad and Emelia Skistad, who shattered the program race record.

    The boys’ team won four events, including two relays.

    Steinbach won the girls’ 100-meter (12.30) and took second in the 200 (PR, 25.50). Emelia Skistad won the girls’ 200-meter (25.28). Isabel Mahoney won the girls’ 800 (PR, 2:21.33) and 1600 (5:08.77).

    Steinbach, Kacie Lilledahl, Kaela Skistad and Emelia Skistad won the girls’ 4x100-meter relay (48.58) by shattering the previous program record by about two seconds. The 4x400 team won (3:46.48) and Camenae Gustafson won the girls’ discus (101-04.5).

    Isabella Angell won the girls’ 100 (27.91) and 200-meter (PR, 58.05) wheelchair races.

    Dallas Christensen won the boys’ 800-meter (PR, 51.82), Ty Brouwer won the boys’ 1600 (4:26.72) and Martavius Guertin won the boys’ high jump (PR, 6-01). The boys’ 4x100 relay team also won (43.30).

    There were a number of other top-10 performances as well.

    Lilledahl took sixth in the girls’ 100 (13.43) and Brooke Lindberg was ninth (13.73). Jaden Fuchs was seventh in the girls’ 200 (PR, 27.90). Veronica Joseph (1:05.76) was fourth in the girls’ 400 while Lilledahl (PR, 1:06:16) was fifth. Alexis Rimmer (PR, 2:31.26) was fifth in the girls’ 800. Whitney Sala (PR, 2:31.60) was sixth in the 800.

    Audrianna Gohman was sixth in the girls’ 100-meter hurdles (18.01). In the girls’ shot put, Jasmin Downer (32-0) was the runner-up, Kathrine Lemke (29-0.5) was fifth and Allison Hart (28-08) was sixth. Lemke was also second in the discus (95-07.5). Downer was seventh in the discus (81-05.5) and Hart (76-04.5) was 10th. Savannah Swanson tied for ninth in the girls’ high jump (4-05).

    On the boys’ side, Christensen (PR, 11.72) was fifth in the 100-meter, Alvin Bropleh (PR, 11.87) was seventh, Ryne Brouwer (11.88) was eighth and DJ

    Hausmann (11.93) was 10th.

    The 200 looked similar. Gus Staryszak (PR, 23.44) was third, Ryan Richardson (PR, 23.64) was fourth, Jack Geislinger (23.90) was sixth and Ryne Brouwer (PR, 23.40) was ninth. Santiago Castro took ninth in the boys’ 400 (PR, 56.32). Ayden Smith (2:05) was fourth in the boys’ 800 while Logan Dorion (PR, 2:13.2) was 10th.

    Chris Falk (PR, 4:34.31) was fourth in the 1600. Ezra Pemberton (PR, 4:49.83) took seventh in the 1600. Richardson (16.97) was third in the 110-meter hurdles and Noah Scherber (17.78) was eighth.

    Patrick Shobe was third in the boys’ shot put (42-08.5). Owen Hartfiel (36-06) was 10th in the shot put. Three boys’ had top-10 finishes in the discus: Staryszak (third, 137-01, PR), Shobe (fourth, 115-03, PR) and Hartfiel (seventh, 109-05).

    Sterling Grams (PR), Gus Singh (PR) and Vincent Kaley tied for ninth on the boys’ pole vault with a height of 9-0. Bropleh was third in the boys’ long jump (20-07). Jorge Rosales-Valenzuela (PR, 35-07.5) was seventh in the triple jump.

    Weather permitting, the 2024 Mississippi 8 Conference Track and Field Invite was held on Wednesday at Zimmerman High School. The Section 5AA Track and Field Meet is on Tuesday, May 28 at Monticello High School. The Minnesota State High School League State Track and Field Championships are held from June 6-8 at St. Michael-Albertville High School.

    Also of note, the girls’ junior varsity team won the JV Conference Meet on Thursday, May 16. The Magic have won the girls’ JV track and field meet every season since the conference was formed. According to sources, the Mississppi 8 Conference was formed in 2004 and began competition in 2005-6.
