Under first-year Head Coach Chad Hayda, the Monticello boys’ lacrosse team accomplished a long-awaited milestone for the first time when they won the conference title. With a 16-7 win over Chisago Lakes on Thursday, May 23, the Magic went handed the Wildcats their first conference loss of the season and undefeated in the Greater West Conference at 6-0.

“Winning the conference is a great step in the right direction for this program. Another box that we had our sights on checking off this year,” said Hayda. “Now, we shift our focus to section success - that is what truly matters.

Everyone involved in this program wants that first state appearance and we are going to fight tenaciously to achieve it.”

Monticello won their final six games to finish with a 9-4 record and was given the #3 seed for the Section 8 playoffs.

The Magic stormed out to an early lead and kept the Wildcats off-balance all game. Monticello led 4-1 after one quarter and 10-3 at halftime.

Callan Jacobson had six goals and three assists. Austin McGill had four goals. Gunnar Simon had two goals and an assist. Michael Jones had three apples. Aiyden Zinnel, Aidan Widmark, Brady Lerberg and Garret Bauer all had a goal and an assist. Ayden O’Brien made eight saves.

Finishing on a high note, the red and black beat Delano/Rockford 10-8 in the regular season finale. Jones had a hat trick, Zinnel had four points, Braden Ziegelmeyer scored twice, and O’Brien had nine saves.
