Learn about travel tours, lawn care, more at Senior Center

By Pam Loidolt Monticello Senior Center,

    2024-06-06

The senior center partners with a travel company to provide quality extended tours. Staff from Landmark Tours will be at our center at 1 p.m. on Thursday, June 20 to talk about a number of extended tours they have scheduled.

A local, family-owned tour operator, Landmark’s inclusive packages feature round-trip airfare, quality accommodations, enjoyable meal experiences, admission to all itinerary attractions and more. You do not have to sign up in advance to attend this session. Come and check it out.

If you like to garden or want to learn more about how to take care of your lawn, check out the “Ask a Master Gardener” session we have coming up at the center. This month, we will discuss vegetable garden maintenance and a host of other topics.

A Master Gardener volunteer from the University of Minnesota Extension will be at the center at 12:30 p.m. on Friday, June 21. Come join fellow gardeners to ask a variety of questions. Please sign up in advance if you plan to attend, 763-295-2000, and there is no charge to attend.

There is no charge for people to get help with technological issues. Bring your personal device, laptop, tablet, or smartphone, and connect with an experienced digital handyperson who can help you: adjust settings for basic use, communication, online safety, and security; personalize your device for your needs and interests; find and use functions, services, and apps that will be most helpful to you. You do need to call us to make an appointment for this service that is offered every Tuesday morning.

People do not need to sign up in advance to attend the monthly senior center Book Club. This group meets on Wednesday, June 12 at 9:30 a.m. They will be discussing the books “Something Wicked” by David Housewright and “Under a Flaming Sky: The Great Hinckley Firestorm of 1894” by Daniel James Brown. You can also pick up the next book the group will be reading.

If you like to crochet, sew, scrapbook, embroider, weave, etc., come to the senior center on Tuesday, June 11. The senior center Handiwork Group will meet that day at 12:30 p.m. There is no instructor, just people with projects getting together.

If you want to learn how to knit, I encourage you to give us a call at 763-295-2000 to sign up to come to the knitting class that will take place on Monday, June 17 at 1 p.m. There is no charge to attend and yarn and knitting needles will be provided.

If you are a caregiver, I encourage you to check out the senior center’s Caregiver Support Group that will meet on Thursday, June 13 at 10:30 a.m. If you’re helping an older adult in your life, you are a caregiver. The group is facilitated by licensed social worker Becky Allard. You can also make an appointment to meet individually with Allard. She can help you get the support you need to sustain your ability to provide help and maintain your own life balance. Becky’s phone number is 612-804-0968.

Allard also facilitates the monthly Memory Café events. The Memory Café is a safe and comfortable place where caregivers and their loved ones with memory loss can participate together. Join us with guest activity facilitators Wright County Extension Master Gardeners on June 12. The meeting will be held at Crow River Senior Center from 1:30-2:30 p.m. Caregivers have the option to attend a concurrent caregiver support group. Please sign up if you plan to attend, 763-497-8900.

You can get your blood pressure checked at the senior center on Tuesday, June 11 from 11 a.m. and noon. Nurse Ali from St. Benedict’s Center Senior Community will be on hand to provide this valuable service. You do not have to sign up in advance.

Please note due to safety, parking, and congestion concerns the senior center will be closed on the day of Walk & Roll, June 8.

I also want to give you a heads up the senior center will be closed on June 18 and 19 when all new light fixtures will be installed.

Ten May Trivia Contest sheets turned in had all the answers correct and they were from Jeanne Christy, Connie Erickson, Tim Erickson, Duane Georges, Alice Kantor, Paul and Dianne Klein, Barb Liefert, Tom Liefert, Sharon Long and Bernice Nathe. If you like a challenge, stop by the center and pick up a June Trivia Contest sheet. Maybe you will win the $10 cash prize.

The winner of last week’s euchre tournament was Mary Kuechle. There was a three-way tie for second place between Dale Chamberlin, Loren Heckmann and Tom Wright.

Just a reminder that the senior center will have a booth at Walk & Roll on Saturday, June 8. This event will take place from 9 a.m. to noon. If you are out and about that day, please stop by our booth and say “hi.”
