Upper Fairfield Township, Pa. — A 65-year-old Montoursville woman was killed after the vehicle she was riding in was hit by a passing driver, officials say.

Kathleen McFadden was the front passenger in a vehicle being driven by her husband as the pair headed north in the 4800 block of Upper Fairfield Township just before 8 p.m. A Jeep driver coming in the opposite direction moved into the McFadden's lane to pass a vehicle, and struck the vehicle nearly head-on, said Lycoming County Coroner Charles Kiessling.

It appeared both drivers tried to avoid the crash by swerving, but the passenger sides of both vehicles collided, he said. Mrs. McFadden was trapped in the wreckage and pronounced dead at the scene of multiple blunt force trauma. Her husband was taken to UPMC Susquehana Williamsport Hospital, then transferred to the trauma center at Geisinger Medical Center in Danville.

The driver and passenger of the Jeep were evaluated by EMS at the scene and cleared.
