In the end, Bob Dean got the mercy he didn’t show to residents of the nursing homes he owned. As Hurricane Ida approached in 2021, Dean ordered staff to move 843 patients in southeast Louisiana to a former pesticide warehouse in Independence. There they languished in squalid, overcrowded conditions with no air conditioning for days. Staffers told Dean about the deteriorating situation, but he ignored them. Five deaths were directly tied to the evacuation, but many more elderly and infirm suffered and died in the aftermath.
