MONTVILLE, NJ - The Montville Fourth of July Carnival held their annual hot dog eating and pie eating contests on Thursday, June 27.
The hot dog eating contest began at 6:30 p.m. Participants had five minutes to eat as many hot dogs as they could, with the winner receiving a trophy. Both children and adults participated in the competition.
At first, the competition only had four contestants. The competition’s host yelled to the crowd about the free hot dogs they would be receiving if they participated, in order to convince people to join. Four more contestants joined, bringing the total to eight contestants.
Gregory Frieland, the competition’s winner, ate four and a half hot dogs to win the title. The amount that other contestants ate ranged from two to four.
“I wasn’t expecting to enter it,” Frieland said.
“Yeah, very last second – was definitely a lot of fun,” said Aaron Liebowitz, friend of Frieland. “I would one hundred percent do it again with practice.” Liebowitz also participated in the competition and ate three hot dogs.
Both participants said that the competition was difficult and that their jaws hurt during it.
“There is no good strategy for it,” Frieland said.
At 8:30 p.m. the pie eating contest began. Each contestant was given a personal pie to eat without using their hands. Whoever finished their pie first won the competition and the trophy.
The competition took about six minutes, with Jack Ma finishing his pie first. The competition host proclaimed that Ava Failla came in second place, as the two were in close competition for a majority of the contest.
Ma wanted to shout out his daughter Eleanor, who convinced him to participate in the competition.
A large crowd gathered around both the hot dog and pie eating contests, cheering on the contestants and recording the competition.
