    Homewood officer shot, suspect dead following standoff

    MOODY, Ala. ( WIAT ) — The Moody Police Department is conducting an investigation after a Homewood police officer was shot in Moody early Sunday morning.

    According to Homewood police, a Homewood police officer was shot in the 2700 block of Ross Drive around 4:35 a.m. as he was leaving to report for work. Upon entering his police vehicle, several shots were fired by a suspect into the the vehicle. The officer suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

    The officer radioed for assistance and surrounding agencies responded. The officer was transported to UAB Hospital and is in stable condition.

    Officers identified the suspect as Brandon Gaines, 30. Officers began a search of the surrounding area and then came into contact with Gaines in a wooded area near Queens Court. Crisis negotiators began negotiations with Gaines, which lasted for approximately five hours. Gaines died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

    The Moody Police Department is conducting the investigation.
