MOREHEAD CITY — The Morehead City Marlin scored in each of their last three turns at bat to push past the Wilson Tobs for a 6-5 Coastal Plain League victory in 11 innings Wednesday evening at Big Rock Stadium.
Left fielder Keenan Taylor ripped a two-run home run in the bottom of the ninth inning to tie the score at 3-all for the Marlins, who got the walk-off win in the bottom of the 11th to beat the Tobs for the second night in a row. Morehead City, now 17-14 overall, improved to 2-5 in the second half and 4-2 against Wilson while the Tobs slid to 4-3 in the second half and 19-12 overall, still the second-best mark in the East Division overall.
Tobs first baseman Cole Robinson hammered a solo home run in the first inning, his fifth of the summer, but the Marlins responded in the third on Erich Hartmann’s two-out double off Wilson starting pitcher Andrew Simone.
The Tobs snapped the 1-1 deadlock in the fifth on shortstop Colby Ott’s two-run single. That lead held until the ninth thanks to solid relief work from Jared Hanson, who threw two scoreless innings, while Ethan Wilford, Hunter Dyck and Sebastian Khan each threw a hitless inning for the Tobs. Marshall Whitmer got through the ninth and part of the 10th for the Tobs without allowing a hit either after Taylor’s tying blast off Tony Lamar to start the ninth.
Caden Parker took the loss for the Tobs while Tai Atkins, Morehead City’s third reliever, notched his first win.
Third baseman Jack Kail extended his hitting streak to eight games with an RBI single in the 11th for Wilson while Ott was 2 for 4. Taylor knocked in four runs for the Marlins while Hartmann had their other two RBIs.
The Tobs play a rare Thursday game away from Fleming Stadium on July 4, serving as the guest of the Tri-City Chili Peppers in Colonial Heights, Virginia, before playing a home-and-away two-game series against the West Division’s Martinsville Mustangs with Friday’s game at Hooker Field and Saturday’s tilt at Fleming with fireworks afterward.
