MOREHEAD CITY, N.C. (WNCT) — Police in Morehead City are still investigating a vandalism at the Carteret County Democratic Headquarters that happened Sunday morning.

They said someone threw a nearby planter through a window. Police still have not released any information on a motive or suspects.

Democratic Party Chair Katie Tomberlin said she can’t confirm any motive or if it has anything to do with a recent assassination attempt on former president Donald Trump over the weekend.

“I hope that we can all come together because honestly for all of this anger and all of this violence. Honestly, I think that we want what’s best for this country and it’s okay to have opposing views,” Tomberlin said.

She said insurance will likely not cover the broken window and they will be asking for donations to help cover the cost. She said they have good security measures already in place and they are going to persevere instead of worrying about what might happen next.

“We are strong. Our mamas didn’t raise quitters,” Tomberlin said. “We’re proud to be North Carolinians. We’re proud to be in Carteret County. And I think that this is a time to stand up not stand down.”

In a statement given to WNCT, Representative Greg Murphy said that any vandalism is wrong. The vandal should be apprehended and prosecuted as the law demands.

Regardless of motives, Tomberlin said people need to stay vigilant and respectful. “I think fear feeds fear,” she said. “I think that in 2024, we should always be mindful of the people around you. I think that’s regardless of our political climate, I think that’s just how life is now in 2024.”

She said the headquarters will be closed until further notice to secure the building’s and their volunteers’ safety.
