Demolition set soon for Richwood Avenue redevelopment in Morgantown

State law change credited with Morgantown firefighter holiday pay policy change
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — Changes proposed to firefighter pay in Morgantown are in step with compliance for the implementation of Senate Bill 557, sponsored by Mike Oliverio, R. Monongalia, 12. The law, which took effect 90 days after passage, dictates that municipalities must compensate firefighters who are required to work holidays for their entire shift, even if the work shift spans two calendar days.
'Campus Self-Defense Act' in effect across West Virginia
MORGANTOWN, W.Va (WDTV) - Senate Bill 10, also known as the Campus Self-Defense Act, was officially enacted on July 1st across the entire state. The act allows a person to carry a concealed pistol or revolver on the property of an institution of higher education, as long as they have a valid license to carry. Since it was passed by the legislature in 2023, WVU officials have spent months preparing for campus carry.
Morgantown Public Library celebrates 60th Anniversary of the 1964 Civil Rights Act
BRIDGEPORT, W.Va (WDTV) -As Independence Day approaches, it gives us a time reflect on some of the important moments in our countries history that has helped contributed to making the U.S what it is today. One of those crucial moments was signing of the 1964 Civil Rights Act. The bill, signed by President Lyndon B. Johnson, put an end to segregation; and gave Americans the equal opportunity to enjoy public accommodations without being descriminated against based on race, gender, or national origin. Today marks the 60th anniversary of the milestone that changed this country forever, and to honor that the Morgantown Public Library is hosting a celebration this evening. The night will feature local civil rights activists like ‚Al Anderson, who attended the 1963 March on Washington. Charlene Marshall, who helped integrate local restaurants. Not to mention an exhibit that tells the story of the historical act; designed by the community coalition for social justice. Eve Faulkes, the main designer of the exhibit not only wanted to tell the story of the civil rights movement as a national movement, but also a local one.
Candidate filing period begins for Fairmont City Council election
FAIRMONT, W.Va (WDTV) - Fairmont residents who are interested in becoming city council members will be able to throw their hat in the ring starting next Monday. The candidate filing period for the November 5th Fairmont Municipal Election will begin at 8:30 a.m. July 8th and last until 4:30 p.m. on August 7th.
Hiring changes expected to ease staffing issues at FCI Hazelton
HAZELTON, W.Va. — The federal Bureau of Prisons is changing its hiring process which could help relieve staffing shortages at the Hazelton Federal Prison in Preston County. The change comes more than a year after protests and pickets were held due to increased safety concerns for officers and inmates because of staffing issues at Hazelton. There are currently believed to be 90 job vacancies at the prison.
Campus Carry law takes effects Monday
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — Officials at WVU say they are ready for the Campus Self-Defense Act that takes effect Monday. The law, deemed campus carry, allows those with a valid concealed carry license to carry on college campuses in certain areas. Gov. Jim Justice signed the bill into law in March 2023, despite backlash from college administrators throughout the state.
