The West Virginia University baseball team will be well represented once again at the MLB Draft Combine at Chase Field in Phoenix later this month.

Star infielder JJ Wetherholt and righthanded pitchers David Hagaman and Aidan Major are on Baseball America’s list of combine attendees.

Wetherholt — who is Baseball America’s highest-rated player expected to participate in the combine — is coming off back-to-back All-American seasons as an infielder at WVU. He led the nation in batting average in 2023 as a sophomore, and he led the Mountaineers in batting average this season with most of his at-bats coming after he missed 24 games early in the season with a hamstring injury.

He is widely considered a top-10 prospect in next month’s MLB Draft.

Hagaman won All-Big 12 Honorable Mention as a redshirt freshman in 2023, setting him up to be Randy Mazey’s closer for the 2024 season. Injuries to his teammates thrusted him into a starter/reliever hybrid role in the beginning of the season, and he amassed a 2-3 record with a 5.91 ERA before suffering an arm injury in mid April.

He did not pitch the rest of the season, and he was seen in an arm brace from the last weekend of the regular season through the postseason.

Also relating to injuries within the WVU pitching staff, Major started the season as the Mountaineers’ Friday night starter, and he excelled in that role to start the season. He went at least five innings in each of his first five starts, and three of those appearances were deemed quality starts (at least six innings, fewer than three earned runs allowed).

The junior righty eventually faced some adversity in the middle of the season. He allowed four-plus earned runs in six starts that came in a seven-game span in March and April. He was then moved to the bullpen for the postseason, and he delivered one of the best performances of the year by throwing nearly five innings and allowing just one earned run in relief against Grand Canyon in the Tucson Regional.

He finished the season with 66 innings pitched and a 5.59 ERA.

The combine will take place June 18-21 with scouted workouts during the first two sessions before strength and conditioning segments to end the week during the final two days.
