WVU’s Wetherholt Selected 7th by Cardinals in MLB Draft

MORGANTOWN – West Virginia Mountaineer infielder and arguably the best player to don the gold and blue at this stage of a career, JJ Wetherholt, was selected seventh overall by the St. Louis Cardinals in Sunday’s MLB Draft first round.

Wetherholt had an injury plagued season early, but returned for the latter part of 2024 and helped his Mountaineer team to a first ever Super Regional appearance against North Carolina. He hit .331 with eight home runs and 30 RBIs in just 36 games. His defensive move to shortstop proved to be a good one as he was one of the top defenders in the country as well.

He is expected to make a push for the Cardinals roster as early as next season.
