MORGANTOWN, WV (LOOTPRESS) – The WVU Police Department has a new addition to its team: Chuck, a yellow Labrador retriever born in February 2023.

Handled by Officer Ethan Stepp, Chuck is a specially trained explosives detection K-9.

Explosives detection K-9s play an important role in ensuring the safety of the campus community and the surrounding Morgantown area by sniffing out potentially suspicious items before large events.

These K-9s are particularly active in supporting the WVU Athletics Department, performing searches in and around Milan Puskar Stadium and the Coliseum before home football and basketball games.

“Explosives detection K-9s are a critical part of our department and help protect our community in so many ways,” said Chief Sherry St. Clair. “We are excited to have Chuck on our team and welcome you to say ‘hi’ if you see him on campus.”

Beyond their official duties, these K-9s live with their handlers and form special bonds with everyone they meet.
