    Olivia woman charged with assault

    Ana Koarenn Moreno de la Garza, 35, Olivia, was charged in Morrison County District Court with one felony count of assault by strangulation, one gross misdemeanor count of interfering with a peace officer and one misdemeanor count of assault.

    The charges stem from a July 17 incident, when the Little Falls Police Department received a report of a domestic assault occurring at a residence in Little Falls. Officers arrived at the scene and met with the victim. She reported that she was assaulted by the defendant, according to the report.

    The victim provided a statement to an officer. She stated that the defendant had been angry at her and was yelling at her. She stated that prior to calling 911, the defendant was yelling at her, calling her names and getting in her face. The victim stated that she was trying to leave the apartment and get away from the defendant, but she wouldn’t let her leave. The victim stated that the defendant pushed her down several times, but she could not get away because the defendant kept coming at her. The victim stated that she told the defendant that she was hurting her, but she did not stop. The victim stated that the defendant grabbed her by the shirt, which she ripped. Per the report, the victim stated that the defendant pushed her into the TV, which hurt her back and caused her pain. She stated that the defendant grabbed the front of her neck and squeezed her neck, which also caused pain. The victim stated she forced her way out of her apartment and the defendant followed her out to her car. The victim stated she called 911 from her car and drove away.

    According to the report, the defendant was located and placed under arrest for domestic assault. The defendant was very upset and tried pulling away from the officers. Officers struggled with the defendant to handcuff her as she continued resisting. Eventually the defendant was handcuffed. While being escorted to the squad car, the defendant tried using her body weight to drop to the ground. Once at the squad car, the defendant refused to get into the car and had to be forced in by officers. Eventually the defendant was transported to jail.

    If convicted on the felony charge, the defendant faces up to three years imprisonment and/or a $5,000 fine. If convicted on the gross misdemeanor charge, the defendant faces up to 364 days in jail and/or a $3,000 fine. If convicted on the misdemeanor charge, the defendant faces up to 90 days in jail and/or a $1,000 fine.
