615 properties on or around New Bern Avenue have been rezoned as the City of Raleigh prepares to start construction for the Bus Rapid Transit line.The old DMV building is one of the properties rezoned for mixed-use space at Tuesday's Raleigh City Council meeting.Mayor Mary-Ann Baldwin said the zoning changes will offer more housing options."Density is key and the federal government is very excited for what we've done," said Baldwin.Lifelong Raleigh resident Angel Howard said the development comes at a price. NCCU student crowned Miss North Carolina
North Carolina Central University sophomore Carrie Everett was crowned the 2024 Miss North Carolina on Saturday night at High Point Theatre. Everett, who is also Miss Johnston County, will represent the state at the upcoming Miss America pageant. NC Chinese Lantern Fest tickets go on sale
Tickets are on sale for this year's North Carolina Chinese Lantern Festival, which will return to Cary’s Koka Booth Amphitheatre in November. The annual event features more than 40 all new hand-crafted displays, each one comprised of hundreds of parts, and thousands of LED lights. Cultural arts performances will take place each night on the main stage. This is the ninth year the event has been hosted at Booth Amphitheatre. It will run Nov. 16 to Jan.12, 2025.

Power back on for many customers in Durham, Wake and other counties after trees fall on power lines
Electricity has been restored to most customers across multiple counties in central North Carolina.Duke Energy workers spent the morning on Lakeview Drive clearing trees that fell on some power lines causing dozens to lose power.According to the Duke Energy outage map, only a few dozen homes lost power in that area because of it.Sunday night storms led to downed trees that fell or power linesThe peak of the outages was around 5:30 p.m., according to a Duke Energy map. The map now shows most across the Triangle should have their power back on.The severe weather also caused troubles at Raleigh-Durham International Airport. There are only a handful of delays and cancellations on Monday morning compared to the hundreds of flights on Sunday.This comes as Independence Day approaches. Saint Augustine's University board seeks dismissal of alumni lawsuit
The Saint Augustine’s University Board of Trustees is trying to stop a lawsuit filed by the alumni organization Save SAU Coalition and two former board members. On Monday, lawyers representing the board filed a motion in Wake County Superior Court to dismiss the complaint filed by the Save SAU Coalition and former board members Henry Debnam and John Larkins.
Durham City Manager Wanda Page Announces Her Retirement
DURHAM, N.C. – City Manager Wanda Page has announced that she will retire from the City of Durham after 36 years of service. She emailed her notice to Mayor Leonardo Williams and City Council members earlier today (July 1), saying she “believes now is the right moment to begin the transition of passing the torch to new leadership and allow fresh perspectives to shape the future of our beloved city.”
