A Mount Airy woman was fatally injured late Wednesday afternoon after a car she was driving veered off the roadway and struck a tree.

Tiffany Nichole Burkhart Anderson, 36, a resident of Lineback Road, was identified as the victim of the single-vehicle crash by the Mount Airy Police Department.

It occurred shortly after 5 p.m. Wednesday while Anderson was operating a 2003 Ford Focus on Arlington Street toward South Main Street in the vicinity of an Eagle Carports Inc. shop.

The vehicle went left of center at one point and off the pavement, striking a tree on the left side of the street.

Anderson was the lone occupant of the car.

After the collision, persons on the scene administered CPR to the victim in an unsuccessful effort to save her life.

It is not known what caused the vehicle to go out of control.

“It looks like an existing medical condition did contribute to that,” Police Chief Dale Watson said Thursday.

“That’s what we think,” Watson added, saying this was based on contacts with Anderson’s family.

The wreck victim is originally from Patrick County, Virginia, where she resided on Unity Church Road in the Ararat community.

Anderson was a graduate of Patrick County High School.

Frontal damage occurred to the Ford Focus.
