FLOOD WATCH
The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a Flood Watch through Wednesday for the entire Giant-FM WAKO listening area. The remnants of tropical storm Beryl have reached the region and are forecast to bring possible heavy rain of close to 3 inches during the period. This amount of rainfall on hard dry ground could cause flooding of rivers, creeks, streams and other low lying areas and flood-prone locations. Those living in areas that flood should keep tuned to Giant-FM for additional weather information and be prepared to take action should flooding occur.
VCSC welcome new hires for next school year
VINCENNES — Vincennes Community School Corporation’s board of trustees welcomed a number of new hires to the school corporation at the board meeting Monday morning. Rachel Wolters will teach seventh grade science at George Rogers Clark Middle School in the coming school year. Wolters earned a master’s degree from the University of Massachusetts in Boston and most recently has worked as a nurse.
LAWRENCE COUNTY ARRESTS
The Lawrence County Sheriffs Department (LCSD) arrested a wanted Richland County woman early Tuesday morning. Taken into custody was 24 year old Aradia Thompson of Olney. She was wanted on a warrant for Failure to Appear in Court and was also charged with Unlawful Possession of Methamphetamine. She was booked into the Lawrence County Jail and was being held there. The LCSD Tuesday arrested 30 year old Jared Lee of Lawrenceville on charges of Domestic Battery and Probation Violation. He was booked into the Lawrence County Jail and was being held there pending a detention hearing.
UNIT 20 PRE-K SCREENINGS
The Regional Office of Education #12 and Lawrence County Unit 20 have announced they will host Pre-K screenings coming up early next month. They will be held on Wednesday August 7th from 12 p.m. till 6 p.m. at Parkside Elementary School in Lawrenceville. All 3 and 4 year old children in the district are invited to be screened. The results of the screenings will be shared with parents or guardians. The children can than be placed in a preschool program or put on a waiting list for the 2024/2025 school year. Robinson Takes Undefeated Record To District 1 Championships Series Against Olney Tonight
Robinson and Olney will play today for the District 1 Tournament with Robinson currently in the driver’s seat at 3-0 in tournament action after last night. In the opener, Robinson handed Olney their first loss in the semifinal 7-1. Elliott Jansen won his 2nd game of the tournament, going the distance with 13 strikeouts.
Gibson County Fair to kick off Sunday
GIBSON COUNTY— The 168th Gibson County Fair will kick off on Sunday, July 7th. The fair will run from July 7th through the 13th at 709 North Embree Street in Princeton. Organizers say there will be free admission for lunch until 2 p.m. on Sunday, with some food booths opening at 11 a.m.
“Best Of” Fall Sports—Top Football Game of the Year
Our Top Football Game of the Year is the Vandals’ 34 to 22 win at Lawrenceville in Round 1 of the Playoffs. The Vandals jumped out to a 14 to 0 lead with 5:20 remaining in the first half. But, Lawrenceville would score twice in the next 4:09 including two point conversions to take a 16 to 14 lead at halftime. The game would remain that way until the Vandals got a TD with 2:36 remaining in the 3rd quarter to regain the lead at 20 to 16. After extending the lead to 27 to 16, Kannon Wollerman had an Interception/Pick 6 to extend the Vandals lead to 34 to 16 and they would go on to win, 34 to 22. This was the Vandals 6th playoff win in the past 7 seasons.

Our Coach of the Year for the Fall of 2023 is Vandals Football Coach Jason Clay. After losing a very talented Senior group after the 2022 season, the Vandals kept their playoff streak going in 2023 with a 6 win regular season to earn an automatic playoff berth and then winning a road playoff game at Lawrenceville in Round One.

Jerry McGarvey, 85, of Grayville, Illinois, died Thursday, July 4, 2024, at Deaconess Midtown Hospital in Evansville, Indiana. He was born July 16, 1938, in Grayville, Illinois, the son of William Raymond McGarvey and Jewel (Simmons) McGarvey. He was married to Betty (Carr) McGarvey on December 31, 1975, and she survives.
