Irene F. Drolema (1936 – 2024)
Irene F. Drolema, 87, of Morrison, IL, died Monday, July 15, 2024, at Homestead Assisted Living & Memory Care, Morrison, IL. Irene was born September 19, 1936, in Morrison, to George and Grace (Dykema) Drolema. She was educated in the Morrison Grade Schools and was a 1954 graduate of Morrison High School. Irene was employed at Herman Nelson for 12 years and then at Bull, Luden, and Potter Attorney’s office for 33 years. A lifelong member of Ebenezer Reformed Church, Irene participated in the church Choir and Bible study groups. She was also actively involved in preparing funeral lunches at the church and sang in the Cantata at Emmanuel Church. Dedicated to community service, Irene volunteered with AARP, assisting with income taxes, and also knitting baby caps for Genesis Hospital. Irene enjoyed going on walks and had a passion for traveling, which she shared with her sister, Cornelia. Together, they visited all 50 states. She was also a member of the Quad Cities Plus 60 Club in Davenport, IA.

Miles & Preston 4H Clubs held their Local Show at Great River Threshers
The Miles – Preston 4H Clubs held their Local Show Saturday evening, July 13, during Thresher weekend. The indoor judges were Luke Holdgrafer, Joy Gnade and Kierra Messerich. Joey Portz judged Clover Kids. There were 18 indoor exhibitors. Junior Indoor Champion was Isabelle Lawson. She made a Miles Maverick 4H sign using string art. Reserve Junior Champion was Charlie Manthei. Charlie constructed a wiffle ball strike zone. The Intermediate Indoor Champion was Maya Ruden with a photograph of a yellow flower. Presleigh Matthiesen won Reserve Intermediate Champion with her photograph of a cat. In the Senior division John Portz took home Indoor Champion with a picture of a swan. The Reserve Senior Champion was Tate Ruden with a photograph of a butterfly. John Portz won a gift card to Theisens for having the most indoor projects.

From Indonesia to Bellevyue
Muhamad Gani Wijaya (center), a foreign exchange student from Indonesia who attended Bellevue High School during the 2018-19 school year (hosted by Bud and Jeanette Hartung-Schroeder at the time), was back in town with his family last week visiting Iowa and other parts of the United States. The young man graduated from the Jiangsu University of Science and Technology in China this past spring, and majored in engineering and computer science. He and family members (from left) include his sister, Rhama Zain Chairani; father, Sugiyono Wijaya; mother Yuliana Wijaya; and sister Atika Marwa. The entourage visited the Schroeder family at Bellevue Heights, as well as Hartung Family Farms, Bellevue State Park, Bellevue Elementary School and Bellevue High School. The group flew back to Indonesia Thursday with copies of the Bellevue Herald-Leader with reading material on the 20-hour flight.
Braves runner-up at Zwingle Tournament
On Saturday July 13, the Bellevue Braves faced Epworth in the Zwingle Baseball Tournament and came away with a 3-2 victory. The Braves took the early lead when in the first Andrew Swartz singled, and Ethan Hefel proceeded to drive him in with a triple. In the third Hefel was hit by a pitch, then scored on a Chet Knake double. The next batter up was Cole Swartz who drove in Knake with a single. That was all Braves' right-hander Jordan Nelson would need as he scattered four hits while fanning seven. Mitch Roeder took the loss for Epworth.
New consignment shop opening in Princeton
After closing her consignment store in Rock Falls, Jenny Chagala is reopening the store in her hometown of Princeton. “Today marks a significant milestone in my journey: I’ve finally secured the building I’ve been dreaming of for years to relocate my consignment shop, and it’s back in my hometown where my heart truly belongs,” Chagala said on the business’ Facebook page July 2.
