‘Rock the Raft’ in Morrison on Saturday
The Morrison Department of Fun is hosting their 2nd annual Rock the Raft on Saturday, July 20, with two departure options to float or paddle down Rock Creek. The Family Float starts at 1 p.m. and the Sip & Splash starts at 2 p.m. Participants will launch their own float, kayak, or canoe at the covered bridge on Norrish Road. Fatal 2020 Sterling apartment fire case in court this week
MORRISON, Ill. — The trial of a Rock Falls man charged with murder and arson is ongoing this week in Whiteside County. Steven Coleman is accused of setting the fatal fire on June 1, 2020, in the overnight hours at the Western Apartment Complex in Sterling. A 49-year-old woman and two girls, aged 8 and 13 died in the fire. A 35-year-old woman and 12-year-old were rescued and taken to the hospital. A Dixon firefighter and paramedic was also injured in the fire after falling through the floor.

Irene F. Drolema (1936 – 2024)
Irene F. Drolema, 87, of Morrison, IL, died Monday, July 15, 2024, at Homestead Assisted Living & Memory Care, Morrison, IL. Irene was born September 19, 1936, in Morrison, to George and Grace (Dykema) Drolema. She was educated in the Morrison Grade Schools and was a 1954 graduate of Morrison High School. Irene was employed at Herman Nelson for 12 years and then at Bull, Luden, and Potter Attorney’s office for 33 years. A lifelong member of Ebenezer Reformed Church, Irene participated in the church Choir and Bible study groups. She was also actively involved in preparing funeral lunches at the church and sang in the Cantata at Emmanuel Church. Dedicated to community service, Irene volunteered with AARP, assisting with income taxes, and also knitting baby caps for Genesis Hospital. Irene enjoyed going on walks and had a passion for traveling, which she shared with her sister, Cornelia. Together, they visited all 50 states. She was also a member of the Quad Cities Plus 60 Club in Davenport, IA.
