High school volleyball: Lake coming off standout season in NBC
A team that went on a long postseason run looks to return to the top of the Northern Buckeye Conference volleyball standings this fall. Lake (21-7, 13-1) bids for its fifth straight title after sharing the conference title with Eastwood in 2020 and winning the past three championships outright. The Flyers of coach Amy Vorst made the deepest tournament run in program history in 2023, reaching the Division II regional final before falling 3-1 to eventual state runner-up Gates Mills Gilmour. They look to contend for another NBC title this year, with Eastwood, Otsego, and Oak Harbor (13-12, 8-6) viewed as the chief competitors for that crown.

The high school volleyball season is well under way and, as most area teams are beginning league play this week, it's time to take a look ahead to see which squads are expected to have the best chance at contending for titles. Last season, longtime area big-school power St. Ursula reached the Division I state final four for the 13th time and for the first time in eight seasons under coach Jason Reilly. The Arrows, competing for the first time in the Michigan-based Catholic High School League's Central Division, parlayed a challenging schedule into a strong Ohio tournament run. St. Ursula, 19-9 overall and 4-2 in the CHSL Central, lost twice to Bloomfield Hills Marian, once in league play (3-2) and later in the Bishop Cup playoffs (3-1).
