Commentary: Public libraries do more than serve communities, they help build them
I've always had a deep love for libraries. I remember the excitement every time our family walked into a library, thrilled by all the books. When I was hired by the Olean Public Library, it felt both surreal and serendipitous. I was going to be the real-life Belle and skate around on ladders putting books away! However, it turned out to be quite the opposite. While I do work with books, I have found that the real focus is working with the community.

Pieces of the Past — Warren State Hospital Part 2
The Warren State Hospital is truly a community gem. One factor is the jobs it created and continues to do so! A number of professionals were recruited to come here. Doctors, and other staff that would easily have gone elsewhere and contributed to another area. My classmate for six years was Sheila Reinhard. Her father was both a medical doctor and psychiatrist. Without him here things might have been quite a bit different. In addition to the professional staff, there were the hundreds of jobs that the facility has created for families all over the county.

Della Moore: Local Cultural Icon
With so much talk about octogenarians in the news, please meet an Olean gal by the name of Della Moore, an 85-year-old bundle of energy whom I defy you to keep up with. Della, although not a native of Olean, moved here from Philadelphia with her husband, Jimmy Moore and her son and daughter in 1972, in her mid-thirties, to find a better life for her family and to be with her husband’s Olean family. Although she was close to her own parents, Robert Lee and Opense Patten, her Aunt Gladys and three sisters, a brother and a niece who was like a sister, she never hesitated and immediately adopted Olean as her home.
