Mount Laurel man admits to possessing pellet-filled pipe bombs

TRENTON — A Burlington County man found with pipe bombs in his car and home has admitted guilt in federal court, authorities say.

Jeremy Giliberti, 52, of Mount Laurel has been in custody since his arrest after a traffic stop in Hamilton, Mercer County, in July 2023, court records show.

Police officers noticed Giliberti made "odd statements" and acted suspiciously during the 11 a.m. stop on South Broad Street, a criminal complaint says.

It describes Giliberti "mumbling his speech, rambling, avoiding eye contact with the officers, nervousness, smiling a lot and making quick, twitch-like movements."

Giliberti claimed he was on his way to get a pizza while returning home from an appointment in Bristol, Bucks County, but a pizza box was already on his car's front seat, the complaint continues.

It also describes Hamilton, which is north of Bristol, as a "significant detour" from a conventional route to Giliberti's home in South Jersey.

The complaint says police, suspecting Giliberti's car held illegal drugs, obtained his consent for a search.

It alleges an officer found a duffle bag on the front passenger-side floor with four explosive devices. Two were made from five-inch steel pipes; the others used cardboard tubing wrapped in duct tape.

A fifth device was found later at Giliberti's home.

All of the devices included an explosive mixture and metal pellets, along with a fuse, the complaint says.

Police found more pellets, steel pipes and threaded caps in Giliberti's home.

Giliberti told police he had built the devices, "but attempted to mischaracterize them by calling them 'quarter sticks' and fireworks," the complaint continues.

Giliberti admitted guilt to possession of five destructive devices during a July 23 hearing in Trenton federal court.

U.S. District Judge Georgette Castner scheduled sentencing for Dec. 3.
