(July 15, 2024) — Goodwill Industries of Eastern North Carolina, Inc. (GIENC®) will hold a Community Outreach Event Fri., July 19 at its Kinston store at 4190 W. Vernon Ave. The event will include free medical screenings and dental care (via Baptists on Mission), free legal aid (via Legal Aid of North Carolina), a pay-what you can mobile food market (via Ripe for Revival), and free STEAM educational experiences (via GIENC’s mobile STEAM lab). By expanding access to these vital resources for Kinston residents, GIENC will continue its mission of transforming lives through life-enrichment opportunities.

Kenneth Earl Garris, 75, of LaGrange went Home to be with his Lord and Savior on Tuesday, July 16, 2024 at his home surrounded by his wife, children and grandchildren. Goldsboro man arrested for possessing a stolen firearm
KPD"s C-Squad officers were searching the area of Dixon Street for a report of shots fired. Officers made contact with Sentelle Leonard (24 of Goldsboro, NC) in the area and discovered he was illegally concealing a handgun. Officers also discovered the handgun was previously reported stolen to the Asheboro Police Department. Leonard was taken into custody and charged with Possession of a Stolen Firearm and Carrying a Concealed Gun.

Kinston police released surveillance pictures of a man in a convenience store earlier Wednesday. The shooting happened in the area of Stadiem Drive and Stroud Avenue, according to officers.

JCPS kick starts 2024-2025 school year with Leadership Conference
SMITHFIELD — Johnston County Public Schools (JCPS) administrators throughout the school district gathered at Cleveland High for the annual Leadership Conference held July 16-18. JCPS organizes the conference each year to provide valuable information for administrators to learn and share with their school teams. On day one, the focus was curriculum and instruction. Day two consisted of departmental overviews and updates. Day three focused on policies and procedures, and school safety. JCPS school resource officers were celebrated for their continued efforts to ensure the safety of every campus.

A bank employee in Kinston has been arrested and charged with assault by strangulation, after an incident in June. According to a news release from the Kinston Police Department, on June 20, 2024, officers responded to an assault report at Wells Fargo located at 1903 W Vernon Avenue.
