Death of beloved UPS driver mourned
Eastern Hampshire County last week mourned the passing of a beloved, long-time United Parcel Service driver. Van Gaus, 56, of Cumberland, Md., was found dead in his truck Tuesday of an apparent heart attack. His was a familiar, beloved face on the route that included the Capon Bridge area. An outpouring of tributes on social media followed news of his death.

RHP Zach Messinger (5 IP, 4 R, 2 ER, 4 H, 4 BB, 2 K) took the loss in his 16th appearance (14th start) of the season. Over his last 11 outings since the start of May, the Yankees No. 21 prospect has posted a 2.84 ERA and 1.09 WHIP in 57 IP with 62 K. Messinger ranks among the Eastern League leaders with a 3.60 ERA (10th), 92 K (1st), 85 IP (3rd), .211 AVG (6th), and a 1.14 WHIP (5th). Messinger has allowed 2 ER or less in 12 of his 16 appearances this season for Somerset.
Supervisor to attend solar workshop
A representative of Liberty Township will join other municipal leaders to learn about utility-scale solar systems at a workshop in Bedford later this month. The topic was among several items discussed at the July meeting of the Liberty Township Supervisors, held in the township municipal building in East Saxton.

Bedford Borough has released the tentative construction schedule for replacement of cast iron pipe waterlines from July 8-11. One crew will be working on East Pitt Street between Wood and Bedford streets, with parking restricted on both sides of East Pitt to allow for one-lane traffic controlled by temporary lights. A second crew will be performing asphalt restoration on Juliana Street between Pitt and Penn streets, and Penn between West and Richard streets on July 8, and on Penn between Richard and Anderson streets on July 9. In both areas, parking is restricted to allow for two-way traffic. On July 10 and July 11, the crew is scheduled for project restoration throughout the borough.
