Students dive into STEM activities at FSU
FROSTBURG, Md. — Twenty high school students from counties in Maryland and Pennsylvania had the opportunity to participate in the 2024 Frostburg State University STEM Summit on FSU’s main campus June 18-21. During this four-day, three-night event, students were engaged in STEM instruction and problem-solving as they reinforced and expanded their knowledge in these fields and stimulated their interest in a STEM career by networking with science professionals. This event also helped Frostburg expand outreach and engagement with high school STEM coordinators, teachers, and administrators across the region and gave the university the chance to showcase the STEM opportunities available at FSU.
Bedford man charged with murder in Clearfield shooting
(Clearfield) - A Bedford man is in custody on 1st degree murder charges after allegedly shooting a Lenox man Thursday morning. The Iowa DCI says authorities were called to Broadway Street in Clearfield just after 3 a.m. for a report of a shooting. Upon investigation, deputies found 19-year-old Colby Nelson dead from a gunshot wound.
Fireworks for the Fourth
Fourth of July will be celebrated at Fort Bedford Park, Bedford, with entertainment, festival food, a cornhole tournament and fireworks. Food stands will be open from 3 to 10 p.m. Vendors include Wood Fired and Parker’z Fired, D&R Concessions, mini donuts, Meadows Kettle Corn & Lemonade, 25 Fresh Freeze Dried and Sno-Oasis.
Homicide Investigators Looking Into Triple Murder’s Death In Prison
Maryland State Police are conducting an investigation into the death of Ralph Ruark, an 80-year-old inmate at the Western Correctional Institution in Allegany County. Ruark was serving a sentence in the maximum security prison for a triple homicide committed in Salisbury, Maryland in 1972. On October 14, 1972, Ruark fatally shot his estranged wife, Glenda Smack Ruark, 25, at a bookstore in the Salisbury Mall. News reports at the time said that the incident took place in front of several customers and that Ruark was apprehended shortly after the shooting.
Meyersdale teen, instructor build flag to hang in Homeland Security Newark office
MEYERSDALE ― From one Meyersdale Area High School graduate to another, a part of history will be remembered for generations to come. Conner Shuck, a 2024 graduate of Meyersdale, volunteered to construct a wooden flag to honor the lives lost in the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11, 2001, when Flight 93 came down in Shanksville. With the guidance of Doug Horne, Meyersdale's tech ed teacher, Shuck took nine weeks to design and build the wooden flag. It is now on display at Homeland Security Investigations in Newark, New Jersey, next to a steel beam recovered from the attack on the World Trade Center.

Bedford High School graduate Craig Prescott, son of Wayne and Sue Prescott of Everett, is this year’s recipient of the Bedford Lioness Lions Club Scholarship. While at Bedford High School, Prescott was involved in numerous activities, such as the high school, county and district bands, Envirothon and Fellowship of Christian Athletes and was on the golf, tennis and Everett rifle teams. Prescott also served as class president grades 10-12. Prescott has earned numerous Scouting awards and achieved the rank of Eagle Scout in 2022. This fall, he will be attending North Carolina State University to pursue a career as a game warden and conservation officer.

KEYSER, W.Va. (WV News) — Mary Jon (Kelley) Warnick, age 87, formerly of Keyser, West Virginia, died peacefully in her home on Tuesday, June 18. She fought a very courageous battle with IPF (Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis — a lung disease), remaining positive throughout her long journey and never stopped fighting the fight.
