Back in time
A number of Romney citizens met at the New Century Hotel last Friday evening for the purpose of working out a plan for fire protection for the town and community. Dr. E. B. Martin was elected chairman of the meeting. The officers selected for the permanent organization are W. R. Hill, president; Blair M. Haines, secretary, and Edward W. Miller, treasurer, and the volunteer fireman, in addition to those named, are J.B. Saville, Bernard W. Hill, C. O. Keckley, Lonnie V. Peters, H. B. Jackson, Owen Bucklew, Madison Combs, and Arthur X. Schuller. The matter in question was discussed at length and it was decided that, because of the insufficient supply of water in the reservoir to properly meet fire emergencies, and the fact that chemicals are more effective than water for fighting fire, the most adequate protection would doubtless be afforded by the purchase of a chemical fire engine.
Terry Rugg
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Terry “Chub” Rugg, age 66 years of Confluence, on Tuesday, June 25, 2024. He is survived by the love of his life, Beverly (Cameron) Rugg. They were high school sweethearts and were married for forty-seven years. She gave him three wonderful children – daughter, Alisa Miller and her children Aimma and Ansen Miller; sons, Marcus Rugg and the mother of his children, Shannon Nichols and their children, Caynan, Gunner, Hazel and Marcus, Jr. and Herschel Rugg and his wife, Charity and their children, Colt and Rhylan Rugg. He adored his eight grandchildren and loved his three children. They grew up to make him very proud. Many prayers go out to his brother, Gary and wife, Tamara Rugg of Addison and his sister, Kathy “Sis” Nicola and husband, Brian, Ursina and to all who knew and loved him. Chub was preceded in death by his parents, Floyd and Janet (Barkley) Rugg and his older brother, Jim. For the past twenty-eight years he was the owner of Dodd’s Hotel with his wife, Beverly. They enjoyed traveling whenever possible. Chub was very well known and loved by many. He was one of a kind. He played men’s softball for many years and loved shooting pool, going golfing and watching sports. We lost a great husband, father, grandpap, brother and friend the day God called him home. There will be no viewing or funeral service per his request. Arrangements by Humbert Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Confluence. Area fire crews kept busy on Tuesday
A hazmat incident and a brush fire combined to make a busy day for area fire departments on Tuesday. Bedford Fire Department was alerted in the morning for a possible propane leak at a cabin at 6600 Lincoln Highway in Bedford Township. Fire Chief Gary Cooper said a contractor at the site, well back from the highway, apparently struck a valve on a 1,000-gallon propane tank.
