Fightin Phils snap a three-game losing streak with 5-2 victory over Somerset
READING, Pa. - Lachlan Wells threw six solid innings as Reading defeated Somerset 5-2 on Saturday night at FirstEnergy Stadium. Kendall Simmons and Josh Breaux each homered as the Fightin Phils snapped a three-game losing streak. Reading will have two days off before starting a homestand against Akron on Tuesday.

Anthony (Tony) Lea began his new position as director in May. Maryland State Police Investigating Fatal Crash In Frederick County
(FREDERICK, MD) – Maryland State Police are investigating a fatal single-vehicle crash that occurred this morning in Frederick County. Shortly after 7:35 a.m., Troopers from the Maryland State Police Frederick Barrack responded to Raven Rock Road (Maryland Route 491) for a report of a crash involving a tractor-trailer. The driver, and lone occupant of the vehicle, identified as Daniel Edward Ryan, 41, of Ridgeley, West Virginia, was declared deceased at the scene by Frederick County emergency medical service personnel.
Rockwood Spring Sports Athletes Earn All-Metro Recognition from St. Louis Post-Dispatch
A total of 36 Rockwood School District spring sports student-athletes representing all four high schools earned All-Metro recognition from the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. These athletes -- 17 boys and 19 girls -- made the Post-Dispatch All-Metro teams in baseball, golf, lacrosse, soccer, track and field, volleyball, water polo. A total of 15 athletes earned first-team honors -- including Players of the Year Kyle Kubasta (Lafayette High, boys volleyball) and Kylee Pickens (Eureka High, girls lacrosse) -- 12 earned second-team recognition, and nine were named to the third team.

Opal Harbaugh
Opal Pauline Harbaugh, 98, of Somerset, passed away on July 5, 2024 at the Patriot. She was the daughter of the late Simon Peter and Jennie Rugg. Opal was preceded in death by her husband, Oscar of 69 years; infant son, Michael; sisters, Louise, Ada, Nellie and Ester; and brother, Robert. She is survived by sisters, Nelda Bruebaker and Dolly Limley; sons, Roger (Cheryl), Dale (Carol), Jim (MaryAnn) and David (Audrey); and 5 grandchildren, Brad, Stacey, Michael, Amy and Britney. Opal is also survived by seven great-grandchildren and four great great-grandchildren; and numerous loving nieces and nephews. She was a member of Christ United Methodist Church. She worked until retirement. Opal enjoyed cooking for her family, tending to her flowers and working on jigsaw puzzles. She was a wonderful mother and will be greatly missed. The family would like to extend their gratitude to the staff at the Patriot for their loving care towards Opal during her time there. Friends and family will be received on Tuesday, July 9, 2024 from 11 am until the time of service at 1 pm at MILLER FUNERAL HOME & CREMATORY of Somerset. Pastor Doug Burns officiating. Homer A. Miller, 85, Stoystown (Buckstown), died July 6, 2024 at Hollidaysburg Veteran Home. Born Nov. 26, 1938 in Shanksville, son of Clarence and Marie (Godfrey) Miller. Preceded in death by parents and brother Ralph. Survived by daughter Cathy (David) Houseworth; grandchildren: Robyn (Robert) Ritchey, David Jr. (Cheryl) Houseworth, and Julie (Bradley) Beegle; great grandchildren: Gage, Garet, Marissa, Adam, Emma, Caden, and Leah; great great grandson Easton; brothers: Jerry and Mervin Miller; sister Judy Saville; and close friend George Critchfield. He was a U.S. Army Veteran and the owner of H. Miller Excavating. Member of Stoystown American Legion Post 257, Bedford Moose, New Baltimore Sportsman’s Club, and Jenner Rod and Gun Club. E. Wayne Shaulis, 87, Berlin, died July 7, 2024 at home. Born April 12, 1937 in Friedens, son of Earl and Hazel (Mull) Shaulis. Preceded in death by parents, sister Dolores Miller, and son-in-law Bradley Boburchock. Survived by his wife of 66 years, the former Shirley Mowry; children: Sherri (Rick) Hostetler, Alan M. Shaulis and companion Melanie Barkley, Roxann Garrety, and Todd M. Shaulis, Sr. and companion Erin Paugh; eight grandchildren; ten great grandchildren; one great great grandson; sisters Alice Rainey and Linda (Robert) Rhodes; and brother Douglas (Judy) Shaulis. He was a 1955 graduate of Bedford High School. He was a sales representative for Capital Equipment and a manager for Stewart Amos Equipment. Member of Listie Brethren Church and a former member of the Somerset Jaycees. He enjoyed hunting, playing on his computer, and was an avid NASCAR/Tony Stewart and Chase Elliott fan. He made campaign buttons for local politicians for many years. There will be no viewing or service at Wayne’s request. Friends are welcome to visit Shirley at home.
