John Franklin “Frank” Cole, Sr., 77, of Romney, passed away peacefully in the early morning hours of Wednesday, July 10, 2024. Born in Rochester, Pa., to the late Charles Jacob Cole and Hilda Katherine Minor Cole, Frank was the eldest of four children. In addition to his parents, Frank was preceded in death by his wife of 33 years, Carolyn Messmer Cole; and his brother, Thomas Cole.

Moonlight walks continue. Shawnee State Park’s moonlight walks return July 19. The moonlight walk around Shawnee Lake will begin at 9 p.m. at the beach entrance of the No. 2 parking lot. Dogs will be permitted. Bring flashlights. On July 21, the park will present “Old Time Thingumajigs” at 7 p.m. in the Historic & Interpretive Center at the main office. During the program, attendees will return to the world of yesteryear by using and making devices like whirligigs, thaumatropes, whimmydiddles and Jacob’s rung. A tale of two nurses
In March 2011, my Aunt Mary (who raised me from the time I was 2 years old until I was 18 years old), spent the final days of her life in hospice care. She became a patient of Hospice of the Panhandle. Mary’s home was in Romney off of Jersey Mountain Road. It was late at night when she declined rather quickly. Several family members were at her son’s house where Mary was staying, but none had witnessed a loved one die. All personal care and medications were administered by me, a longtime licensed practical nurse.
