John Mason Coyle
John Mason Coyle, 89, a resident of Linville, passed away on Sunday, July 21, 2024 at his home. Mr. Coyle was born in Charleston, West Virginia on July 6, 1935 and was a son of the late Douglas Gardner Coyle and Josephine Sutler Coyle and stepfather, John Graves. He served his country for 41 years in the Army and National Guard, where he taught infantry, cartography and many other specialties. He was a member of the Harrisonburg Elks Lodge #450 and of Edom United Methodist Church.

Calhoun, attorney, Franklin, whose office was destroyed in the recent fire, which swept the business portion of the town, is rebuilding it with a view to the historical. It will be out of rough stone set in “crazy” design, and in the walls and chimney will be interwoven the history of Pendleton County. There will be a stone from the cabin of Francis Evick, the pioneer settler, from whom the name of Franklin was really derived; from that of Serish Stratton, near Ruddle, in which the county organized more than 126 years ago; from historic Fort Seybert; from the top of Spruce Knob, the highest point in the state; top of Shenandoah mountain; from noted Seneca Rocks; from all the districts in the county and one of the stone steps from the old jail at Charles Tow, in which John Brown was confined, and from other historical buildings and places.

Annual Harrisonburg Citizen Academy now accepting applications
HARRISONBURG, Va. (WHSV) - The annual Harrisonburg Citizen Academy is now accepting applications from Harrisonburg and Rockingham County residents. The academy will be held one night each week from Aug. 22 to mid-November. The 13-week course allows participants to visit City of Harrisonburg departments and some partner organizations to learn about the services, programs, and events available to community members. In addition, attendees will have the opportunity to see firsthand the tools, equipment, and vehicles staff use in tax-paying duties.
