MOUNT VERNON, In (WEHT) – Recent tornadoes tore through Posey County and Mount Vernon a week ago, and while the community works to recover, the United Way of Posey County is stepping in to help.

Executive Director Keely Winiger says the United Way acts as a funder to the agencies in the community.

“A lot of the times the agencies don’t have more than one person. They don’t have time to fundraise outside of their office duties, so that’s what we do. We’re like Stuarts of the money, make sure the agencies are doing what they can and get what they need.”

Winiger also states the United Way finds grants if there is a big need within the community.

Winiger explains what role the United Way does after a natural disaster.

“We have a 211 program where everyone that has been in a disaster and have had a loss of any type, they call 211 and be directed. We’re kind of the informational tool and whatever our community needs. We receive phone calls from the American Red Cross, our Trustees office in Black Township because they needed undergarments, so we went to our volunteers and our sources and got undergarments.”

Winiger says her desire to help the community goes back to her father, but helping the community now feels great.

“United Way is all about making an impact on our community, finding what the community needs, finding the sources. Every household may not feel like have been touched by our organization, but in some way, they have,” she said.
