Parkston’s Trojan Den giving a hand up to students in need
PARKSTON, S.D. — A nondescript bag on the floor greets Colleen Mette as she unlocks the door to the Trojan Den at Parkston High School. It may be a bag of hygiene items contributed by a student, or perhaps it’s a collection of items intended for a family that needs a few pieces of clothing as the new school year approaches. Mette, an art teacher for the Parkston School District, collects the bag and enters the room filled with racks of T-shirts, snow pants and button-down dress shirts.
DWU names Ryan Chase as new track and field, cross country coach
MITCHELL — Dakota Wesleyan University announced Ryan Chase as the program's new cross country and track and field head coach on Monday. A Huron native, Chase graduated from Dakota Wesleyan in 2020 and coached cross country and track and field for Mitchell Christian for the last two years. During that time, he oversaw a second-place finish at Class B state cross country in 2023 and three different individual state titles between cross country and track. Chase takes over for former head coach Matt Rosado, who left after the spring season.
Baseball: Mitchell Sweeps Black Sox

Legion Baseball: Parkston To Face Tabor For Region 4B Title
CORSICA — Parkston advanced to the championship of the Region 4B American Legion Baseball Tournament with a 13-5 victory over Wagner on Thursday in Corsica. The championship game against Tabor is set for 1 p.m., with the “if necessary” game to follow.
Forestburg Historical Society explored
Does the Forestburg area have enough interest in preserving its unique history to work toward creating an Historical Society? Are there volunteers interested in working on and supporting such a project? Are the pioneer homesteader family histories along with the Ruskin Park story, the watermelon industry, and the various county school histories worth preserving in a local museum? Could the wonderful 500-page history of Sanborn County compiled and printed in the 1960s by Mrs. Alice Mitchell Brown and Sherman S. Judy be preserved and expanded in such an effort?
Letcher wraps up regular season, hosts 16U postseason tournament
The Letcher Hawks Teeners 16U Legion baseball team played their final home game of the season on Thursday, July 18, against the Parkston Post 3298 16U team. Even though they scored first, the Hawks had a difficult time keeping up with Parkston throughout the rest of the game and lost with a final score 1-11, Parkston.
Youth Week activities highlight Youth Month at Dakotaland
All locations of Dakotaland Federal Credit Union are celebrating Youth Month for the entire month of July. To make the month extra special, they celebrated Youth Week last week, July 15-19. The Woonsocket Branch kicked off the week on Monday with a visit from Professor Toto who brought an Absolute Science Mega Foam Blaster to the ball field for the kids to play in a pool of foamy bubbles. Professor Toto works for Absolute Science from Davenport, Iowa, and he does presentations about science for schools and libraries.

Established in 2022, the Avera Achieve Sponsorship Program supports selected sophomore DWU nursing students with $20,000 in education funding for their junior and senior years, as long as they successfully complete their studies and commit to working as nurses in the Avera Health System for three years following graduation.
