MUNCIE, Ind. — Muncie police are investigating the Thursday morning shooting of a local man.

According to Deputy Police Chief Melissa Criswell, emergency dispatchers received a report of "multiple shots fired" in or near the 1100 block of East Fifth Street at 6:23 a.m.

Officers found a 44-year-old man outside of his vehicle who had been shot "multiple times," Criswell said.

The victim was taken by ambulance from the shooting scene, in Muncie's Industry neighborhood, to IU Health Ball Memorial Hospital and was later flown by medical helicopter to IU Health Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis.

He was reported to be in critical condition, the deputy police chief said.

Anyone with information on the shooting is asked to call the Muncie Police Department's detective division at 765-747-4867 or city police dispatchers at 765-747-4838.
