MUNCIE, Ind. — A woman was killed early Wednesday when she was struck by a pickup truck southeast of Muncie.

According to Jeff Stanley, chief deputy for the Delaware County Sheriff's Department, dispatchers about 2:45 a.m. received a call reporting a "possible security concern" on Delaware County Road 550 South, just east of U.S. 35.

The caller reported seeing someone pushing a small vehicle — believed to either be a golf cart or a four-wheeler — before hearing a "loud bang."

Deputies determined a Dodge Ram had struck both a golf cart and a female pedestrian. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

According to the chief deputy, three people — two females and a man — were riding in the golf cart when it malfunctioned. The man then left to retrieve his truck to tow the golf cart, a news release said.

Stanley said the truck was "traveling at a high rate of speed" when it struck the golf cart and the female victim. The truck then left the road, traveling about 100 yards in a field before coming to a stop.

Both the truck's driver and the other female at the scene were taken to the sheriff's department for interviews.

"It is believed alcohol was a factor in this fatal crash," Stanley said.
