Five Free and Cheap Family Things To Do in Middle Tennessee
The days may be getting shorter at this point, but that doesn’t mean you won’t need a few things to fill all those hot daytime hours we still have left. This time, because of the insane heat, we’ve offered mostly indoor options: Head to the library to check out some zoo animals. Go for a family jam sesh at the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum. Take the tiny kiddos for a storytime in Murfreesboro. You can also check out the Discovery Center, where you can hang out inside a while and then go out at 3 p.m. to watch them feed the turtles. Set in a beauty salon in Chinquapin, Louisiana, where all the ladies who are “anybody” come to have their hair done. Helped by her eager new assistant, Annelle (who is not sure whether or not she is still married), the outspoken, wise-cracking Truvy dispenses shampoos and free advice to the town’s rich curmudgeon, Ouiser; an eccentric millionaire, Miss Clairee, who has a raging sweet tooth; and the local social leader, M’Lynn, whose daughter, Shelby (the prettiest girl in town), is about to marry a “good ole boy.” Adult tickets $15; Seniors (age 65+) and children (17 and younger $13.
