Reeves-Rogers Elementary School will be gaining $2.8 million expansion for a safer administrative wing, the Murfreesboro City Council decided Thursday.

The expansion that won unanimous funding approval will be adding about 4,000 square feet to a school that opened in 1959. The project should be ready by summer 2025, Murfreesboro City Schools Director Trey Duke said after the council approved the project.

"We're really excited about this new expansion," said Duke, who recently accepted a contract extension through June 30, 2028 with an initial annual pay of $180,000 that started July 1, 2024.

The expansion will help a school that serves about 400 children across the street from the northside of the Middle Tennessee State University campus.

"It's going to add some much needed office space, meeting places for parents when they come in, some small-group rooms for students who may need specialized services, a new nursing clinic and just overall modernize the building," Duke said.

The school held a ground-breaking ceremony for the community to celebrate the project at 10 a.m. Friday. Reeves-Rogers Elementary is located at 1807 Greenland Drive.

"We just want to say thankyou to our school board," Duke said. "This has been a major priority for the school board and to the city council for helping to push this through."

Reeves-Rogers Elementary Principal Natalie Hardiman said she's pleased with the extra security that will be part of the project.

"We are so excited to get this new front office," Hardiman said. "We're adding a conference room. We're adding a teacher work room. This has been a long-time coming and a long-time dream of ours, and we are so excited for it."
