SOUTH WALTON, Florida — A collaborative effort led to the successful rescue of a 206-pound male Loggerhead sea turtle accidentally hooked by a fisherman on the shore, underscoring the strength of community action in South Walton.

The South Walton Turtle Watch expressed deep gratitude for the quick response that made the rescue possible. "Thankful is the only word that comes to mind," the group shared, highlighting the immediate actions of the fisherman who reported the incident, Michele from the Walton County Sheriff's Office, and Tammy, a dedicated "turtle hero" from the team, who swiftly brought the turtle in.

Jennifer and other team members from the South Walton Fire District, along with Deputy Kyle Niemi from the Walton County Sheriff's Office, also played critical roles in the beachside rescue. The turtle is now receiving care at the Gulf World Marine Institute.

"It literally takes a village sometimes, but when you have a success like this, it sure makes everything worth it," the organization added.

The South Walton Turtle Watch reminded the public of the importance of following specific steps if a sea turtle is accidentally hooked. The stranding hotline (850-865-4503) should be contacted immediately, and the line should not be cut, as hooked turtles need to be evaluated by trained veterinary staff.

The team remains hopeful for more good news as they continue their vital work protecting sea turtles in the region.
