With the Fourth of July fast approaching, many locals and visitors alike are making plans to watch or set off fireworks. While playing with fire is generally discouraged, the Fourth of July marks one of the few occasions where pyrotechnics are not only accepted but celebrated.

“We’re in the peak of our season right now, getting ready to go crazy,” said Mark Curtis, salesman at Bootlegger Fireworks.

If you’re looking to get some fireworks of your own but are unsure where to start, here are some of the most popular fireworks in the Myrtle Beach area, according to local vendors.

Dragon Tears - $44.99 This pyrotechnic display is a fountain, which means it sends sparks from the ground roughly 20 feet into the air. The sparks generally spin and come down in a willow shape. The Dragon Tears fountain is notable for the liquid appearance of its sparks. “We sell a lot of these because it actually looks like lava coming out of it,” said Phantom Fireworks of Myrtle Beach manager Michelle Turner. “It’s really cool.”

Eye of the Storm - $39.99 This aerial firework only needs to be lit once to set off 16 shots. The shots explode in a chrysanthemum shape and feature a variety of spinning, strobing and crackling effects.

Wicked Pissah - $39.99 Another aerial firework, the Wicked Pissah features 30 shots that explode into star bursts, then golden crowns with a crackling willow finale. The colorful packaging boasts that the Wicked Pissah is a Boston favorite.

Popo Magnet - $119.99 As the name suggests, this firework will likely draw more attention than the Eye of the Storm or Dragon Tears. With 36 shots, the Popo Magnet has strobing and crackling effects and features golden palm-shaped bursts and red explosions for a finale.

Phandemonium - $259.99 This firework has a whopping 205 rapid fire shots and, according to Turner, is, “very, very popular.” She recommends the Phandemonium as a grand finale. It features chrysanthemum, peony and willow shaped explosions and has pearl comets and crackling and whistling effects.

Excalibur - $259.99 According to Curtis, this 24-shell mortar kit is the most popular in the world. “It’s the most dependable, the best color range and sounds,” Curtis said. “That’s why it’s number one in the world.” Mortar fireworks are placed into a reusable tube and shot into the air. This colorful kit features willow, chrysanthemum, peony and dahlia shaped bursts.

Gladiator - $259.99 Also featuring 24 shells, the Gladiator is Phantom’s newest mortar kit. Turner says the large 6-inch canister shells are popular, especially with male customers.

If you’re planning to set off fireworks, remember to follow the recommended safety measures and local and state laws . Nothing ruins a celebration like a hefty fine or a trip to the emergency room.
