After weeks of below average rainfall, Myrtle Beach and surrounding areas are in a drought. More than 98% of Horry County is experiencing a drought and nearly 265,000 residents are living in drought areas.
Roughly 57% of the county is experiencing a moderate drought, while nearly 42% of Horry County is facing a severe drought, which typically results in crop or pasture loss and water shortages. While Horry County typically gets about 4.95 inches of rain in June, the area has dealt with its share of droughts over the years.
According to National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration statistics, Horry County received about 52% less rain than normal for June — making it the county’s 9th driest June since 1918.
“We’re about 3 and a half inches below normal for the summer so far,” said Victoria Oliva, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service’s Wilmington Office. “So it would definitely be nice to get back close to normal.”
