Rockford barbershop owners celebrate five years at helm

ROCKFORD, Ill. (WTVO) – Phil Hughes and his daughters, Franki and Quincy have been cutting hair at Downtown Barbers in Stewart Square for the last five years.

The family team bought the business in April 2019 from founder Dave Armstrong and continue to grow their client base.

“We specialize in men’s haircuts, beard trims, shaves,” said Quincy Quinones, who’s been cutting hair for 10 years.

Quinones says the best part of working downtown for the last five years have been the faces that come through the door.

“I get to meet so many people that I never would have met before,” she said. “There’s a lot of professionals I get to meet.”

Those professionals, along with their family and friends, keep coming back for haircuts that always include a personal attention to detail, something customers say is vital when finding reliable barber.

“It’s important to find someone you can trust you can go to consistently to look your best,”  said Mike Folta, broadcaster for the Rockford IceHogs. “I work in front of a camera, so it’s extra-important for me to have that A+ look.”

Being downtown has allowed Quinones to see firsthand how the area continues to grow and evolve into a bustling urban center.

“With City Market going on in the summertime , the (Embassy Suites) hotel right down the street, there’s a lot of people coming in and out all the time,” she said.

Downtown Barbers is appointment-only and is also looking for barbers.
