ROCKFORD, Ill. (WTVO/WQRF) — The Big Northern Conference will be short one football program this season. Rockford Christian is out.

Rockford Christian athletic director Isaiah Johnson informed the rest of the conference members Thursday morning at the conference’s athletic directors meeting that RC doesn’t have enough players to safely field a team. Johnson told me in a phone conversation that Rockford Christian had only 12 players come out for the team.

The Royal Lions were barely able to field a team last season. The season was salvaged only after some soccer players decided to participate at the last minute playing both sports. Rockford Christian did not win a game.

Johnson says it’s too soon to say what the future of football is at Rockford Christian, but the hope is that the school will be able to field a team again. Johnson says the rest of Rockford Christian’s sports teams will continue to compete in the Big Northern as usual.
