2 Rockford men charged with possession of a firearm without a FOID

ROCKFORD, Ill. (WTVO) — Rockford Police arrested Alberto Herrera, 21 and Ethan Austin, 19, for possession of a firearm without a FOID among other charges for Herrera.

On August 20, around 9:37, the City of Rockford Gang, Narcotics and Community Service units executed a search warrant in the 3100 block of 19th Street.

Officials said they saw Herrera with two others exit the residence and took him into custody. They then found Austin in the basement of the residence with another woman and detained him.

Authorities found a defaced revolver along with Herrera’s social card, a 9mm handgun, cannabis, ammunition and a digital scale. They also found a hoodie memorializing three Latin Count Street gang members who are in prison.

Under Miranda Rights, Austin admitted the handgun, and cannabis was his but pled the 5th amendment when asked if he was a Latin Count gang member.

Austin was an adjudicated minor for aggravated unlawful use of a weapon in 2022.

Herrera asked for a lawyer when he was interviewed.

He was convicted of unlawful use of a weapon and possession of a stolen vehicle in 2023.

Herrera is being charged with possession of a firearm without a FOID, felon possession of a weapon and possession of a defaced serial number.

Austin is being charged with possession of a firearm without a FOID.
