ROCKFORD, Ill. (WTVO) — The city of Rockford reported police issued 42% more traffic tickets this year compared to last, but that number could rise with the addition of a new radar system in over 80 squad cars.

“You see here, we’re able to monitor as we’re just sitting here, we’re able to monitor those speeds of vehicles,” said Rockford Police Traffic Investigator Rob Trout. “I mean, I can even monitor speeds sitting at a stoplight.”

Trout has been using the Eagle Three Radar system for years. A pair of “always on” radars are mounted to the front and back of squad cars, allowing police to check for speeders without relying on a handheld radar gun.

“The difference with this radar, the Eagle 3, is we’re able to monitor traffic speed around us as we’re traveling versus being stationary or parked. So if there’s a problem, you know, I may be going to another call or maybe going to get gas,” said Trout. “During that time I can enforce traffic [and] make a stop based off of something that I saw at that current time.”

The Eagle Three monitors vehicles across all lanes of traffic, giving officers more coverage while on patrol.

“Without the Eagle 3, I’m not able to monitor the speed of those vehicles that are traveling westbound. With the Eagle 3. I’d be able to monitor that speed and take enforcement if necessary,” said Trout. “I would say 90% of the traffic stops that I conduct with the Eagle 3 are vehicles that are coming towards me or approaching.”

Trout believes expanding the system will boost the enforcement and safety of drivers.

“It’s a great tool because it’s going to allow us to conduct more traffic stops and be more vigilant with enforcement and make the streets safer by slowing down people,” said Trout.

Trout added he has been able to catch more repeat speeders with the system, which he said is the most important way to keep roads safer.
