MACHESNEY PARK, Ill. (WTVO) — Police have arrested a Janesville man accused in a shooting at a Machesney Park apartment that left a 21-year-old man suffering from a bullet wound to his back.

According to the Winnebago County Sheriff’s Office, a deputy on patrol near the Machesney Park Elementary School at 4:30 a.m. Saturday morning heard several gunshots coming from nearby.

A 911 call reported a gunshot victim at an apartment in the 1000 block of Minns Drive.

The deputy saw a vehicle leaving the area and stopped the car, police said, finding a Glock 9mm handgun on the floorboard in the passenger area.

Meovonte Cooper, 22, was arrested and charged with Attempted First Degree Murder, Aggravated Battery with a Firearm, and Unlawful Use of a Weapon.

The victim was taken to the hospital and remains in critical condition, police said.
