Political balance is not simple
Every two years, Norwalk holds a municipal election. And every two years, the results are pretty much the same: Democrats sweep virtually everything of significance. Last November, Democrats retained control of the Mayor’s office, maintained a 15-to-1 majority on the Common Council, and a 9-to-0 majority on the Board of Education.

‘Tough for a Girl’ to air at Norwalk Film Festival
Female Norwalk students compete at wrestling in JD Freda’s 2023 documentary short Tough For a Girl. Produced under the auspices of Norwalk Public School Communications, the film is said to probe “community, female empowerment, equality in sports and sports funding.” According to a news release, it’ll have its World Premiere during the Norwalk Film Festival’s “Best Documentary Shorts” segment on Saturday Jan. 20 from noon until 2 p.m. at the Wall Street Theater. Estrella tops 2023 salary list; Costanzo paid nearly $192K

G-CODE helps Norwalk female teens form lifelong friendships
Jessica Davis, a social worker for the Department of Children and Families, and Shanna Reid, a 14-year special education teacher for Norwalk Public Schools, saw a need. Through her daughter and her friends, Shanna realized there were “no teenage groups for girls in the community.” And so, G-CODE, Girls Creating Opportunity for Developing Empowerment, was born.

Yupp – it’s that time again. Looking back to 2023’s Predictions – https://www.nancyonnorwalk.com/opinion-predictions-for-2023/ – I think I did a pretty good job: I claim 6½ out of 10, a personal best! Okay, some of these were rather easy, but given there aren’t any rules for predictions, I will take what I can get. Here are the wins I claim from last year:
Duff to discuss legislative agenda at Tuesday hybrid HFFC meeting
You can hear State Senate Majority Leader Bob Duff discuss the legislature’s 2024 agenda at Humanists and Freethinkers of Fairfield County’s monthly meeting at 7 p.m. Tuesday Jan. 16 in the Quaker Meeting House, 317 New Canaan Road, Wilton. Attend live or on Zoom. The Freethinkers’ website says, “Bring your questions and engage in a civil non-partisan conversation on the future of our great state.”
Norwalk Board weighs new recreation and park fund
Members of the Norwalk Board of Estimate and Taxation said they needed more information before a proposal to create a recreation and park revenue fund could move forward. The proposal from the head of the department, Robert Stowers, would create a separate revenue fund—outside of the city’s general fund.
Norwalk approves spending $30,000 to support residents impacted by fires
The Norwalk Board of Estimate and Taxation approved a request from the Health Department for funding to assist families affected by fires and other “unpredictable events.”. While the Health Department initially requested $50,000 to cover existing costs and potential ones for the rest of the fiscal year, the Board approved $30,000, adding that the department could come back if it needed more.
Democrats, Republicans, choose Town Committee members
Norwalk’s political Town Committees held caucus votes Wednesday to determine their memberships for the coming two-year terms. Town Committee members vote to endorse candidates for their parties. They are also eligible to be delegates to the nominating conventions for both state and national offices and meet monthly to discuss issues, perhaps influencing those in elected offices.
Free talk about managing stress offered
If you’re a teenager or an adult who is battling stress, you’re far from alone. Come to a free presentation “10 Tips to Manage Stress for Teens and Adults” conducted by stress management expert Wendy Hurwitz, M.D., from 2 until 3 p.m. Sunday Jan. 21 at Norwalk Public Library Main Branch, 1 Belden Ave. Residents from every town are welcome. According to a news release, snacks will be served courtesy of outpatient mental health provider High Focus Treatment Center.

Norwalk Common Council approves HUD agreement, funding for South Norwalk Community Plan
The Norwalk Common Council approved three South Norwalk-related items at its meeting on January 9: an agreement to receive $1.75 million from the Federal government for work at 98 South Main Street; an architect to design the project at 98 South Main Street; and funding for a South Norwalk Community Plan.
OHPA seeks new restaurant for Oak Hills; Dry Dock is out
The Oak Hills Park Authority is once again hoping to get a better restaurant into its facility. “By the end of January, middle of January, the current licensee Dry Dock Smokin’ Aces will be out of there on an amicable basis, having paid what he owes us, and we will be good,” Oak Hills Park Authority member Alan Dutton told the Board of Estimate and Taxation at its Monday meeting.
